Back to School Update

Hi guys!

How was your summer? Mine was pretty boring. I just worked :P. So I know that some of you have already started school or are going back soon. I moved in to residence on Thursday of last week and my first class is tomorrow, yay… This week is quite busy for me because of frosh week.  I also have a roommate and she’s really nice, which is good because I know there are some horror stories when it comes to residences.

I know this post is short, but since I haven’t posted in awhile I wanted to give you guys a little update. Hopefully, I will be able to post something else soon if things are not to hectic.

What did you do this summer? Did you travel? Let me know by commenting on this post 🙂

What Do I Know?

Hey Guys! It’s finally summer and it finally stopped raining here in the Ottawa region. So today I’m going to share with you some Ed Sheeran music. His new album divide came out in March. One of my favourite song on it is What Do I Know? It’s a fun and up beat song. My favourite line of the song is “We could change this whole world with a piano add a bass, some guitar, grab a beat and away we go” and I also like the line “Just re-remember life is more than fittin’ in your jeans”.

What is your favourite Ed Sheeran song? Let me know by commenting on this post. 🙂

The Controversy Surrounding 13 Reasons Why

Hi guys,

This post is about the controversy surrounding 13 Reasons Why the Netflix series. For those who haven’t seen it, there are going to be spoilers, so ***SPOILER ALERT***.

The series’ message is:

  1. Your actions affect people, and what might seem little to you might not be so little for someone else
  2. People care about you, you leaving affects everyone you touched especially those close to you

13 Reasons Why has received backlash from the suicide prevention societies. Some people say the the series romanticizes suicide and doesn’t mention mental illness. Also let’s not forget that the suicide scene can be triggering for people with depression and those who self-harm.

To be honest, I agree with both sides. I think that the suicide scene can be very triggering for someone. I knew about the last 2 episodes before getting to them and I couldn’t watch them alone. My boyfriend was so kind to watch them with me. And that suicide scene was brutal. As a person who used to self-harm, I totally get how the scene can be triggering especially for people who cut or used to cut themselves (like me) because Hannah ends up slitting her wrists. I couldn’t watch all of it even with my boyfriend watching with me. Although the scene can be triggering, I don’t think that it romanticizes suicide. The scene is raw and honest (I watched bits and pieces). Slitting your wrist is very painful and you can see the pain Hannah goes through.

As for the message behind the series, I think they did a good job on that. You see the struggle Clay goes through and her parents. You see the impact it has on Alex. and the others. I think that it also portrait the books message as well.

Let me know what you think about this controversy by commentating on this post. 🙂

13 Reasons Why (Netflix Series)

Hey guy!

So I finished watching 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. The series is based on Jay Asher’s 13 Reason’s Why. For those who haven’t read the book, it’s about teen suicide. Which is an important topic to cover (in my opinion) because whether we like it or not suicide does happen.

It took me awhile to finish the series because the last 2 episodes are so raw and difficult to watch that I wasn’t sure if I could watch them. The episodes are in between 49min and 61min, which is a little longer than the average 45min tv shows like Pretty Little Liars, Breaking Bad, etc. Overall, I found the series very good. It’s a little different from the book, but I think they did it justice. The changes they made were not major (except for the ending), which I found they wrapped it up nicely, because what I remember from the book is that it ended pretty suddenly ( I haven’t read the book in like 5 years). I will not go into further detail because I don’t want to spoil anything, if you choose to watch it (but WARNING: it can be triggering for people who self-harm and it can be very difficult to watch). I liked the fact that you get to see the other characters and not just Hannah and Clay like in the book. There’s also the “documentary” 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons where the actors and producers talk about the important scenes of the show. This helped me separate the actors from their characters.

There is a controversy surrounding 13 Reasons Why and I’ll talk about it in my next post and there might be spoilers in that post.

Catching up

Hey guys! I know it’s been a very long time since I posted something. I’ve been very busy between school, applying to universities and work. So, I’m just finishing up my end of semester project, which is to create a business plan. It’s going not too bad, except for the fact that I cannot seem to get my balance sheet to balance. For those, who have no idea what that means, basically your assets = liabilities + owner equity for your balance sheet to balance. Anyway, enough with the boring school talk. Here’s what I’ve been up to lately… I’m currently trying to finish reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. I’m like halfway through the book and I already think that the movies not that great, considering they were based on the books. I’m sad that the final episode of Bones is on Tuesday (March 28th). I’m also very excited for the new Netflix series Thirteen Reasons Why, which is based on the book. I did a review of the book, if you want to check it out just click on the link -> 13 Reasons Why. The series is premiering on March 31st (I think).

Well, that’s all the news I have for now (exciting, I know… lol). What are you guys up to these days? Let me know by commenting on this post 🙂

The Sound of Silence

Hi guys!

First of all, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that you are enjoying the rest of your lovely holidays!

So I was going through my blog posts today and I realized that I haven’t done a music post in a while.  Honestly, I don’t really know what songs to share because I have so many. I think I’m going to share with you guys The Sound of Silence by Disturbed. The song was originally by Simon and Garfunkel, but I prefer the Disturbed version better.

I find this version is more raw, which in my opinion makes the song more powerful. I hope you like it. If you are a Disturbed fan, which Disturbed song is your favourite? If your not really a fan of Disturbed, which is okay, personally I don’t really listen to their music. What powerful song do you really like? Let me know by commenting on this post. 🙂

Sangria Cupcakes

Hi guys! Happy holidays! So way back in August, I made sangria cupcakes for my mom. She had a girls weekend. They turned out pretty good. I accidentally put grapefruit zest instead of orange. Also, the icing was more liquid than usual because of the wine, so I added cornstarch to thicken it. Here is the recipe I used: http://thefirstyearblog.com/sangria-cupcakes/.

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, but I got a little side tracked. What is your favourite thing to bake? Let me know by commenting on this post! 🙂

Teardrop

Hi guys!

I know it’s been a while. It’s almost exam season and we all know how chaotic that can be. So I decided to take a small break from school work and write this post.

Teardrop is a book by Lauren Kate. Lauren Kate is the author of one of favourite series called the Fallen series. I did a review on it a while ago. Here’s the link if you want to check it out : The Fallen Series. Teardrop is a interesting, but great book. I seriously enjoyed it. It starts a little slow, it gets very intriguing. Without spoiling anything (or attempting not to), Teardrop is about a girl called Eureka. She just lost her mother in a car accident. Eureka’s mother leaves her with various objects that leaves Eureka with more questions than answers. Eureka also meets a strange boy named Ander. But little does she know that Ander has a connection with her mother’s death. And the secret he hides from her will change her everything.

Overall, I found the book to be very well written and I cannot wait to read the sequel titled Waterfall. This post is little short, I guess I’m out of practice. If you have read Teardrop, let me know what you thought about it. If you haven’t read did, what book do you recommend people should read? Let me know by commenting on this post. 🙂

Vanilla cupcakes!

Hey guys!

It’s been a while, I know! So, as you know I’ve taken up baking. So I made Vanilla cupcakes! I used this recipe http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/go-to-vanilla-cupcakes.html?soc=socialsharingpinterest and for the vanilla icing, I used this one http://www.wineandglue.com/2015/06/the-best-vanilla-buttercream-frosting.html, it’s a vanilla buttercream icing. I colored my icing with Americolor food coloring.

I made my first rose icing, the one you see on the cupcake.

So do you guys like to bake? If so, what’s your favorite thing to make? Let me know by commenting on this post! 🙂

Funfetti Cupcakes

Hi guys!

I haven’t done a food post in a very very long time. So update: I recently took up baking and I love it!!! My parents got me a Kitchen Mixer as an early graduation gift this summer. I have purchased various baking items, which I am thinking of posting soon. Two weeks ago, I baked funfetti cupcakes, which I proceeded to decorate them creatively with Americolor gel paste food coloring. The cupcakes were very good. Here’s the link for the cupcakes: http://www.cookingclassy.com/2014/04/funfetti-cupcakes/ . For the icing, I simply separated my icing into four separate bowls and I used the following colors: mauve, egg yellow, mint green and red red.
