So I finished watching 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. The series is based on Jay Asher’s 13 Reason’s Why. For those who haven’t read the book, it’s about teen suicide. Which is an important topic to cover (in my opinion) because whether we like it or not suicide does happen.
It took me awhile to finish the series because the last 2 episodes are so raw and difficult to watch that I wasn’t sure if I could watch them. The episodes are in between 49min and 61min, which is a little longer than the average 45min tv shows like Pretty Little Liars, Breaking Bad, etc. Overall, I found the series very good. It’s a little different from the book, but I think they did it justice. The changes they made were not major (except for the ending), which I found they wrapped it up nicely, because what I remember from the book is that it ended pretty suddenly ( I haven’t read the book in like 5 years). I will not go into further detail because I don’t want to spoil anything, if you choose to watch it (but WARNING: it can be triggering for people who self-harm and it can be very difficult to watch). I liked the fact that you get to see the other characters and not just Hannah and Clay like in the book. There’s also the “documentary” 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons where the actors and producers talk about the important scenes of the show. This helped me separate the actors from their characters.
There is a controversy surrounding 13 Reasons Why and I’ll talk about it in my next post and there might be spoilers in that post.
Lots of love,
